For a long time, health care has focused on the body and, more recently, the mind. But there's a third piece that gets overlooked constantly: our connection to other people. Loneliness, isolation, and disconnection show up everywhere — in recovery, in caregiving, in the workplace, in patients trying to heal alone. We call this social health, and it deserves the same attention as everything else.
The Social Health Academy was created to close that gap. We build short, practical audio lessons and resources for the people on the front lines of care — nurses, home healthcare workers, family caregivers, employers, and people in recovery — so that connection becomes part of the toolkit, not an afterthought.
Health isn't just physical. It's social too.
Our Approach
Small lessons. Real change.
We believe the best learning doesn't ask for hours you don't have. That's why every lesson in the library is 5 to 8 minutes long — short enough to fit into a real day, focused enough to actually stick. No fluff, no jargon, just practical guidance you can use immediately.
Meet Dr. Robert Metcalf
Helping people understand that connection is part of health.
The Social Health Academy was created with the belief that health is about more than the physical and mental aspects of wellbeing. As a psychologist, Dr. Robert Metcalf has a deep understanding of the importance of human connection and the role it can play in how we cope, heal, and navigate life’s challenges.
His work helped inspire the Social Health Academy and its growing Digital Library — a place where people can access simple, practical resources focused on social health, connection, caregiving, recovery, and emotional wellbeing.
The goal is simple: make learning about social health accessible, practical, and easy to fit into everyday life.
Through short audio lessons, downloadable resources, and growing educational content, the Academy aims to help people better understand the importance of connection and find practical ways to strengthen it.
Where We’re Headed
A library for the human side of health.
We're starting with Social Emotional Health Practices, a 32-lesson audio series created for people who care for others — healthcare professionals, caregivers, and family caregivers alike.
The lessons use real-world stories to explore the parts of care that can be easy to miss: loneliness, connection, emotional wellbeing, relationships, recovery, and the reasons behind the behaviours we see every day.
Each short audio lesson gives you a story to consider, a new way to look at the people you care for, and practical ideas you can carry into everyday life. You'll also find downloadable resources to help you reflect and take the learning further.
This is the beginning of a growing library built around one simple idea:
When we understand the social and emotional side of health, we can care for the whole person.
More lessons, resources, and learning experiences will continue to be added as the library grows.
